Commissioner for Oaths and Notary Public
Our registry also includes a Commissioner for Oaths and a Notary Public. According to the Notaries and Commissioners Act, a Commissioner for Oaths administers oaths, and takes and receives affidavits, declarations, and affirmations that will be used in Alberta. A Notary Public has similar duties as the Commissioner for Oaths but is needed if the documents being used are outside Alberta, or need to be “certified as a true copy.” All practicing lawyers are notaries public and can witness, certify, or attest deeds, contracts and commercial instruments.
