Starting July 2, 2026, Alberta is introducing new requirements for driver’s licence and identification card services. If you’re planning to renew your driver’s licence in Edmonton or apply for a new ID card, it’s worth taking a few minutes to understand what’s changing before your visit.
The good news is that the process is still straightforward! You’ll just need to bring a few additional documents the next time you renew. In this blog, we at Riverbend Registry will explain the upcoming changes to driver’s licences and ID cards in Edmonton, what documents you’ll need, and how to prepare in advance.
What’s Changing on July 2, 2026?
This new requirement is one of the key changes to driver’s licences and ID cards in Edmonton, taking effect on July 2, 2026. It helps verify that you’re legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada. The good news is that once your information has been verified, you generally won’t need to bring those documents again unless your legal status changes.

Documents You’ll Need to Bring
If you’re coming in to renew your driver’s licence or ID card, it’s a good idea to have all of your documents ready before you arrive. Depending on your situation, you may need:
- Your current Alberta driver’s licence or ID card
- Acceptable government-issued identification
- Proof that you’re legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada
- Any additional documents required for your specific renewal
Having everything ready ahead of time helps make your visit quicker and reduces the chance of needing a second trip.
Other New Features You’ll Notice
Along with the legal entitlement requirement, Alberta is introducing a few additional updates to driver’s licences and ID cards.
These include:
- An optional Canadian citizenship marker for eligible individuals.
- The option to add your Personal Health Number (PHN) to your driver’s licence or ID card if you choose.
These features are optional for eligible Albertans. If you choose to add them, they can make identification a little more convenient and help keep important information together on one card.
Alberta Licence Service Outage Notice: June 28 – July 2, 2026
A province-wide Government of Alberta system update will affect driver’s licence and ID card services from 6:30 PM on June 28 until the start of business on July 2, 2026. During this time, these services will be unavailable both in person and online.
If your driver’s licence or ID card is set to expire during this period, we recommend renewing it before the outage begins to avoid any last-minute stress.
Please also note that Alberta Licensing Services will be temporarily unavailable on June 30, 2026, from approximately 3:00 PM to 8:15 PM, which may affect services such as registrations, renewals, and transfers.
